Agouti Patten Gene A

Wild Patten Gene (Agouti)

The Agouti pattern is the wild rabbit pattern.

This is the first of the gene sets that dictates the colour pattern of rabbits and is based around the original colour of a wild rabbit, To identify an agouti irrespective of colour there are three tell tail signs,

1. White band around eyes and nose

2. White belly, white under tail

3. Orange yolk across the shoulders

Rabbits in the wild have a brownish fur colour called agouti. Looking closely at this fur, you can see that it is made up of 3 to 5 bands of colour. The hair closest to its skin is grey. This is followed by yellow, followed by black on the tips of the fur. These rabbits also have white bellies. This agouti pattern is found in some domestic rabbits today. They call this colour chestnut. There are several variations of this agouti pattern in domestic rabbits. These variations are caused by other genes and modifiers working together.
